Orange tips are medium-sized butterflies.
Males have orange tips to their wings, while the females' wing tips are black - Butterfly Conservation. Both have attractive lichen-coloured markings on their underwings, resembling an Impressionist version of a William Morris design.
They like hedgerows and damp places such as stream banks.
Females lay single eggs on the underside of flower buds. Caterpillars hatch and feed on the developing seed pod - RSPB. They overwinter in bushes as chrysalises and emerge as butterflies in April.
