Oral contraceptives are to be given to grey squirrels in the UK, reports the BBC.
The plan announced by Environment Minister Lord Goldsmith involves luring the squirrels into feeding boxes, and providing hazelnut spread containing the contraceptive.
The proposal comes from UK Squirrel Accord, a partnership of conservation and forestry organisations, which says that grey squirels cause damage to woodlands by stripping the bark from younger trees – especially oak.
Greys are an invasive species, introduced from North America. About 3 million live in the UK, and they have largely displaced the red squirrel. The new plan could reduce the numbers of grey squirrels by 90%.
